The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
